“Another great shot,” Mark said, smiling as the golf ball landed on the green. The sun was warm, the sky a perfect blue. He loved this course, the rolling hills, the well-manicured greens, the peaceful quiet. He had just finished a fine round of golf with his long-time buddies. He felt a deep sense of satisfaction.

Later that evening, an unfamiliar email appeared in his inbox. It was from a woman he didn't know, a lawyer. The subject line read, "Regarding the Estate of Harold Miller." His father. Mark's muscles tightened as he started reading. His father had another child, a daughter, before he and Mark's mother had met. The letter fell from his hand.

The comfortable glow of the day seemed to fade. He felt a wave of dizziness wash over him. His life was suddenly more complex, a puzzle he hadn't known existed. He took a sip of water, his hand shaking slightly.
